Following a protracted period of poor health under the care of Crescent Hospice, Mr. Billy Wayne Herring, 74, of Mullins, died away peacefully in the early hours of September 30, 2024, surrounded by family, at his residence. For Lou Ray Herring, he was the cherished husband.

Billy, born April 20, 1950, in Mullins, South Carolina, was the son of late James William Graham and Bessie Richardson. Billy spent his life serving people after growing up in the Mullins neighbourhood under the direction of his grandparents, late Mr. Miles and Mrs. Janie Herring. At eighteen, he joined the Mullins Fire Department and spent many years serving until health problems required his retirement. He met Lou during this period and they married to have a loving family.

Billy worked vigorously in carpentry, helping Mr. James Ray, Lou’s father, all through the years. His love for his grandchildren made him very happy and he treasured every moment he spent with them. Billy loved fishing, Sunday NASCAR viewing, and daily FOX News watching in his free time. A committed member of Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church, who over the years made major donations to his hometown.

Apart from his wife, Lou Ray Herring, Billy is survived by his two daughters, Erica Cook of Georgetown and Paige Herring of Mullins; his beloved grandchildren, Mackenzie Cook (fiancé, Hunter Rogers), Ethan Cook, David Cook, and H.J. Rogers; and his siblings, Rosemary Kling, Ginger (Bob), Jerry (Martha) Jackson, Carolyn (Waine) Jernigan, Melanie (Robbin), Bonnie (Kerry) Tanner, and Paul (Arnette). Along with close pals Tony Rabon and Teddy Rabon, he also leaves behind Joseph Ray, Brenda Hattaway, Pat (Jerry) Altman, Dean (Cathy) Ray, and many nieces, nephews, and colleagues from the fire department.

From 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., Friday, October 4 will be visitation at the graveside in Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Mullins. Cox-Collins Funeral Home will support the family as Reverend Thad Jacobs and Reverend Teddy Rabon lead a graveside service at 4:00 p.m.
