The CHP Redding Communications Centre notified units of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Trinity River Area of a motorbike accident near State Route 299 and Burnt Ranch on October 2, 2024, at about 7:30 p.m. The event transpired at mile marker 12.97 in Trinity County. Emergency responders, comprising the CHP, Hawkins Bar Volunteer Fire Department, and Hoopa Valley Ambulance, swiftly arrived to render emergency aid and manage traffic.

CHP personnel assumed control of the situation at 7:46 p.m. Preliminary investigations indicated that the lone operator of the motorbike, identified as David Wilkie, was going westward on SR-299. Wilkie lost control of the motorbike and drifted off the southern side of the roadway for reasons currently under investigation. The motorcycle subsequently collided with a high rock slope, causing Wilkie to be ejected from the vehicle and impact the embankment.

Witnesses, comprising emergency personnel and bystanders, endeavoured to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other life-saving interventions for roughly 30 minutes. Despite their endeavours, Wilkie unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased at the site. During the event, Wilkie was donning a Department of Transportation (DOT) authorised helmet. The potential participation of alcohol or drugs remains ambiguous as the investigation progresses.

The CHP Trinity River Area office is conducting an investigation into this occurrence and appreciates the assistance of partner authorities. Condolences are sent to Mr. Wilkie’s family during this challenging period.
