Richard A. Allen, 73 years old, died peacefully on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the Hildebrandt Hospice Care Centre in Rochester, New York. His life had been devoted to helping others and was marked by love and devotion. Through his compassion, humour, and generosity, his death signals the end of a road that many people travelled via.
Family, friends, and loved ones will gather at Park Presbyterian Church, situated at 110 Maple Court in Newark, where Richard’s life and legacy will be commemorated on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 11:00 AM to honour and remember a man who profoundly changed the life of those surrounding him.
Richard, born in Rochester on August 27, 1951, was the son of late Richard and Violet Collins Allen. He committed himself to assisting others over his career as a counsellor at Catholic Family Charities and FLACRA, therefore transforming many lives. Early in his life, his expertise and sense for beauty were evident when he restored the façade of Victorian homes, so displaying his workmanship and imagination.
Richard harboured a range of interests as well. He valued music, fishing, and woodworking especially. A keen baseball fan, he enjoyed gathering rocks—a unusual hobby that revealed his curiosity and respect of the surroundings. Richard was charming to everyone he knew because of his sharp humour and fast thinking. Being a lifelong buddy of Bill W., he embraced a community that meant a great deal to him.
His loving children— girls Alycia Allen (Glenn Hallert), Sarah Aguglia, and Julia Kornbau (Jacob), and son Benjamin Allen—as well as his committed wife of 26 years, Christina, survive him. Richard loved his four grandchildren—Hannah Burns, Miles Kornbau, Nunzio Aguglia, and Bennett Kornbau. His sister Audrey DeVinney (David) also survives.
Memorial gifts in Richard’s name could be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306 or the Hildebrandt Hospice Care Centre, 2652 Ridgeway Ave., Rochester, NY 14626.
